Evoke misses H1 EBITDA target, cites leadership change as H2 growth driver

Evoke Plc missed its H1 2024 adjusted EBITDA target by £35m to £40m due to high marketing costs and lower than expected revenue, it said in a trading update today.

The 888, William Hill and Mr Green parent company expects to mitigate its losses in H2 by employing up to £30m in cost savings and meeting its full-year earnings expectation.

A change in leadership and operational overhaul were cited as key drivers for cost efficiencies in the second half of the year. This includes 888’s new strategy and value creation plan, set out in March.

As a result, the firm expects H2 2024 revenue growth to be in line with its medium-term guidance of 5%-9%. It also hopes to deliver a 20% EBITDA margin in 2025. Marketing costs will be between £35m and £40m lower in H2 than in H1.

In an analyst note, Regulus Partners said the profit warning was “neither small nor unlucky”.

888 approved for Hannahville tribe online casino partnership in Michigan

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has approved 888’s VHL Michigan subsidiary as the new platform provider for the Hannahville Indian Community’s internet casino website.

Under the arrangement, VHL Michigan will support the tribe, which operates the Island Resort and Casino, with its igaming site that runs under the Sports Illustrated brand.

The deal came about after Churchill Downs Incorporated’s TwinSpires B2B sports betting business, the original platform provider for both online casino gaming and internet sports betting to the Hannahville tribe, withdrew from the agreement last July.

888 launches in Africa, entering four new markets

Online gambling operator 888 has announced the launch of its 888bet brand in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia through the 888Africa joint venture.

888Africa was established in March to operate 888 brands in online betting and gaming markets across select regulated countries across Africa. 888 initially invested in a minority stake in the venture, with the option to increase this to take control and ultimately own up to 100% of 888Africa.

The roll-out of 888bet in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia marks the first launches in Africa since 888Africa was founded six months ago.

Players in each of the countries will have access to online sports betting, while consumers in Zambia will also be able to play online casino games through 888casino.

888 said it is also planning launches in other African markets in the future, subject to local licensing.
