France records 24% increase in H1 bets despite underwhelming Euros

Sports betting in France grew 24% as €5bn (£4.2bn/$5.4bn) was wagered on sports in the country during the first half of 2024, according to new data from the l'Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ).
France took €5.2bn in bets during H1, marking a 24% year-on-year increase, while gross gaming revenue (GGR) rose by 16% when compared to the same period of 2023, reaching €871m.

Online continues to flourish in France, with the online market up 10% year-on-year over H1 and accounting for over €1.3bn in GGR. Online active player accounts (APAs) were up 13% compared to H1 2023, powered by a particularly strong month of June, which included the early stages of Euro 2024. There were over two million APAs in June, up from 1.25 million in the same month last year.

Despite growth across active players and the increased betting amount in the period, the amount bet on the Euros fell short of the ANJ’s €1bn expectations, coming in at €650m. In France, the 2022 tournament generated €900m in total s..

Illegal market outstrips licensed French gambling, AFJEL warns

French online gaming association AFJEL says Euro 2024 handle for its members fell far below pre-tournament estimates amid a rise in illegal gambling in the country.

The illegal gambling problem has reached a tipping point, l’Association Française des Jeux En Ligne (AFJEL) warned, with illegal players totalling four million in 2023, ahead of the regulated sector’s 3.6 million.

While French gambling regulator l’Autorite Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) predicted €1bn would be wagered on the tournament, AFJEL said around half of that figure was staked.

Instead, the association betting volumes were stagnant compared to the last European Championship in 2021. After that tournament, when France was eliminated in the second round, online punters wagered €343m. This would be increased to around €500m when La Francaise des Jeux’s retail network was included.

The amounts staked were also down 25% from the 2022 World Cup, AFJEL added, when €900m was bet as France reached the final.

France regulator ANJ notes “significant progress” in problem gambling prevention

L'Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), the gambling regulator in France, has noted “significant progress” in reducing problem gambling in its review of operators’ action plans.

Since a 2019 ordinance, all operators in France must submit an annual plan to prevent “excessive” and underage gambling. The ANJ then reviews those action plans. The aim is to increase dialogue between operators and the regulator on the issue.

The ANJ observed that the market has made palpable progress on preventing excessive gambling. Actions have been taken to raise awareness, such as messages to players and dashboards.

Protection standards for identification and support for problem gamblers has increased. The number of at-risk players identified and then supported has risen. The majority of operators implementing improved support measures and excluding players who have been identified as most vulnerable to commercial rewards has also gone up.

France to impose role model ban

French gambling regulator Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) has said that it will prohibit the use of an athlete’s image in gambling communications.

ANJ released a number of new gambling sponsorship regulations for sports teams and non-binding recommendations for French gambling sponsorships to “strengthen the regulation of these commercial practices”, which includes a role model ban.

The new rules are the result of a gambling sponsorship working group launched in summer 2022.

France role model ban

Among the proposals is new regulation that prohibits the use of role models in gambling marketing communication. In order to assess whether an athlete could appeal to minors ANJ is to rely on a number of measures.

the regulations prevent the use of athletes in commercial communications

These are to include how favourably children might view the individual, as well as the audience makeup of an athlete on social media.

ANJ said that if 13-17-year-olds make up 16% of the audience, it wil..

France breaks online betting records during 2022 World Cup

French football fans wagered almost €600m online on the 2022 Fifa World Cup, as operators smashed handle and revenue records.

According to figures released by the national gaming authority, l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), some €597m was put down by French bettors, who saw their team lose to Argentina in the final. The handle figure was up 56% on the 2018 Fifa World Cup – which France won – and up 37% on Euro 2020, although the latter featured fewer games.

The ANJ said that while results recorded in FDJ sales outlets have yet to be published, handle for online and retail could exceed €900m.

Some 54 million bets were placed, which was more than double the number in 2018, while the €51m placed on the final between France and Argentina created a new record for a single game and was well up on the €38m wagered on the France-Croatia final four years previously. Some 2.6 million player accounts placed a bet during the competition, representing 2.2 million unique players.
