Betsson, Galera.bet and F12 file Brazil betting applications as submissions hit double figures

Betsson, Galera.bet and F12.bet have joined the growing list of betting applicants in Brazil almost a week after its final regulations were published.
There is less than two weeks until the government’s 20 August initial submission deadline, which guarantees applicants in the first wave will receive a licence by the market launch date.

Betsson, Galera.bet and F12.bet have this week joined the likes of Betano and Rei do Pitaco, who made their submissions in May and July respectively.

Swedish operator Betsson moved into Brazil in 2019 by acquiring a 75% stake in Brazilian sportsbook operator Suaposta. Betsson has invested heavily in Brazil – LatAm accounted for 23% of the operator’s regulated revenues in Q2.

“I think that we have the possibility of tackling [Brazil] quicker than the big brands,” Betsson managing partner for Brazil Andre Gelfi previously told iGB. “We have a good product, we are a very respected brand. I think reputation is a critical aspect of our industry.”

Match-fixing or mass hysteria in Brazil?

A match-fixing storm has recently engulfed football in Brazil with allegations of manipulation and lies providing a dramatic side plot to the upcoming launch of the country’s legal sports betting market. But is the problem actually as bad as feared?
If you ask people to name five things Brazil is most famous for, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t mention football. The bright yellow shirts of the national football team are perhaps the most iconic around, with legendary players such as Pele and Ronaldo leading the Seleção to win five World Cups, the most of any country.

And yet, such a historic footballing nation has seen its most treasured sport thrown into disarray of late.

O jogo bonito is a religion in Brazil, but is there a dark side?
The row erupted when American businessman John Textor, owner of Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas, made allegations of match-fixing against São Paulo players. Textor claimed he had evidence they were bribed in a game against Palmeiras in ..

Survey reveals Betano as most recognisable brand in Brazil

Kaizen Gaming-owned Betano is the most recognisable and trusted betting brand in Brazil, a survey by Env Media has revealed.

Env Media centred its survey on the 20 most popular brands in Brazil, including the likes of Betano, Bet365 and Betfair. The study aimed to establish what operators held the greatest share of voice in Brazil by looking at their visibility and market shares.

This is ahead of the regulated market going live following the December approval of Bill 3,626/2023, legalising sports betting and igaming.

The survey asked 500 active adult bettors which operators they were both aware of and trusted. Betano led the way with 73.4% of respondents stating they recognised and trusted the operator. Bet365, meanwhile, was second, selected by 67.2% of those surveyed.

Brazilian operator Pixbet was third, recognised and trusted by 54.7% of respondents, while Sportingbet and Betnacional were selected by 42.6% and 41.6% respectively.

Betano also held the advantage in Env Media’s s..

What’s behind the slow uptake in Brazil online betting licences?

Brazil is expected to announce its final online wagering regulations in July, but so far only one licence application has been submitted to the regulator. The market has been buzzing with excitement since the window opened on 21 May, so when will the rest of the applications flood in?

The opening of the licensing window marked a crucial milestone in the hotly anticipated legalisation of betting in Brazil, which is expected to become a $9bn (£7bn/€8.3bn) market by 2028, H2 Gambling Capital has estimated.

Fellipe Fraga, chief business officer at local operator EstrelaBet, predicts operators may be waiting for the final regulations to drop in July before formally applying for a licence.

“There are still important topics that need to be discussed in the process of obtaining the licence,” he says.

“The remaining ordinances will contribute to the definition of the strategies that companies will adopt in the regulatory process.”

Fraga says EstrelaBet is seeking further explanation from ..

The CPI will meet weekly and investigate complaints made by players, managers and betting companies. If it finds that games have been manipulated, the CPI will request the court system to ban from football the person responsible.

The CPI was first introduced in December. It will consist of 11 sitting senators, as well as seven substitutes.

“Here are people who definitely want to set the record straight. They want to o..

PNR Tecnologia and Lema request Loterj accreditation amid IBJR criticism

PNR Tecnologia and Lema have become the latest gambling companies to seek accreditation from the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj), which is coming under fire from the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming (IBJR).

On Wednesday (3 April), PNR Tecnologia delivered documentation seeking to operate sports betting and online games with Loterj accreditation. On Friday (5 April), Lema visited the Loterj headquarters.

This was to carry out a proof of concept and evaluate its compliance with Loterj regulations. This was after Lema had previously presented its platform to operate sports betting and ilottery in March.

In March, Caesars Sportsbook-licensee BIG Brazil announced it was looking for Loterj accreditation to offer both sports betting and lottery. Loterj has since been criticised for its attempts to operate in Brazil outside its state of Rio de Janeiro.

PNR Tecnologia director Yuri William threw his support behind Loterj’s initative. He stated: “Loterj has a lot to add to t..

Caesars-licensee BIG Brazil nearing lottery accreditation in Rio de Janeiro

BIG Brazil, a licensee of Caesars Sportsbook, has announced it will look to achieve accreditation with the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj).

André Feldman, president of BIG Brazil International Games, visited Loterj president Hazenclever Lopes Cançado on Thursday. While declaring his interest in operating sports betting with Caesars in Brazil, Feldman also requested information on becoming accredited by the Loterj to offer lottery in Rio de Janeiro.

In February 2023, BIG Brazil International Games partnered with Caesars to introduce sports betting in Brazil when legalised. After Bill 3,626/2023 was approved in December, sports betting is expected to be regulated by late 2024.

“Expectations are high,” Feldman said. “We intend to enter the Caesars Sportsbook brand in Brazil, starting in Rio de Janeiro. We are already working on composing all the technical documentation to, in the next few days, officially enter into the Loterj accreditation.”

Cançado added: “We are very happy wi..

Brazil’s Senate plenary to delay final voting on regulation until December

Today's vote in Brazil's Senate plenary has been delayed until December, following more than 100 amendments to the bill.

Originally scheduled to vote for today (29 November), the Senate plenary has agreed to delay the vote until an unconfirmed date in December.

This follows the bill being presented by Senator Angelo Coronel, a key proponent for legalisation in Brazil.

The newly proposed amendments total more than 100, which will now be considered. These include a proposed taxation of fantasy sports on the same level as the 12% for sports betting and online casino, as well as the role of the health sector in the exclusion process.

Due to the requested amends, and there being a lack of of quorum to vote, the vote will now be delayed.

The president of the Brazilian Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, will now need to decide the next voting date, although this is expected to be in December.

Once the bill is approved, it will need to be returned to the Chamber of Deputies for revie..
