Italy’s igaming revenue dominated by casino and slots in December

Italy's igaming revenue continued its slow decline, even with casino and slots experiencing a big increase at the end of 2022.

Italy’s igaming revenue experienced a subtle decline, with December’s revenue of €315.8m showing a 2% decrease compared to the previous month. Despite this, there was a 1.2% increase year-on-year, indicating a stable increase in the industry.

Both retail sports betting and online sports were reflected in this decline, but the remaining products picked up from the previous month.

The stand out of the sectors was casino & slots, which witnessed an impressive 17% increase by reaching €206.1m revenue in December, compared to its €176.1m revenue in November.

In terms of market share, casino & slots dominated with the largest increase in market share, and online sports betting lost almost a third of its market share from November. BetConstruct to enter Denmark with new licence

Online gaming and betting solutions provider BetConstruct has secured a new licence from the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden).

The licence will enable BetConstruct to offer the majority of its services and solutions to approved operators in the Danish market.

Content and solutions available in the country from BetConstruct will include online casino games, sports betting and live casino, as well as retail solutions for betting shops.

BetConstruct said it plans to work with operators, software providers, payment processors and marketing affiliates as part of the expansion.

“Obtaining a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority is a sublime advantage for businesses to widen their game offerings, enter a new, less saturated market in Europe and provide safe and engaging services to players,” BetConstruct said.

GiG secures Maryland and Pennsylvania licences

Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) has secured an online sports wagering operator licence in Maryland and a full interactive gaming manufacturer licence in Pennsylvania.

The solutions provider said the new licences would allow it to build on its existing presence in North America, with the group already active across New Jersey and Iowa, as well as in Ontario in Canada.

GiG will initially use its Maryland licence to launch the Crab Sports brand in the state, with plans to go live in May this year. Maryland’s online gambling market opened in November and currently features eight mobile sportsbooks.

Portuguese online gambling revenue reaches record €195.3m in Q4

Online gambling revenue hit an all-time high of €195.3m (£173.0m/$213.0m) in Portugal during the fourth quarter of 2022, with record performances across both the sports betting and casino sectors.

Gross revenue for the three months to 31 December 2022 was 39.7% higher than €139.8m in the corresponding period of the previous year and also 23.4% more than the previous quarterly record of €158.2m set in Q3 of 2022.

Online casino

Casino was the primary source of revenue during the quarter, generating €109.8m in total revenue, up 48.3% year-on-year and 23.8% quarter-on-quarter, according to regulator the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ).

Consumers spent €2.98bn playing online casino in Q4, up 42.1% from the previous year’s total and also a new record for the country’s market.

Slot machines were by far the most popular form of online casino, attracting 79.8% of all bets, with French roulette a distant second with 8.5% of bets and blackjack 5.5%.

Michigan online gambling revenue reaches $170.8m in February

Online gambling revenue in Michigan increased 17.6% year-on-year in February, although the US state experienced a month-on-month decline.

Total gross receipts from commercial and tribal operators across igaming and online sports betting for the month amounted to $170.8m, which was up from $145.3m in February 2022 but 8.8% behind $187.3m in January this year.

Some $148.2m of this came from online casino activities, up 2.3% on the previous year but 3.6% lower than January.

Pennsylvania gambling revenue up 21.6% in February

Gambling revenue in Pennsylvania increased by 21.6% year-on-year in February, driven by significant growth across the sports betting and online slots sectors.

Revenue for the month amounted to $456.8m, up from $375.7m in February 2022 and just 1.6% shy of the $464.4m generated in January of this year, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).

Retail slots remained by far the main gambling revenue source in the state with $202.8m, up 4.2% year-on-year, while retail table games revenue also edged up 0.2% to $74.5m.

NJ gambling revenue up 10.4% year-on-year in February

Gambling revenue in New Jersey climbed 10.4% year-on-year during the month of February, with growth in almost all market sectors.

Revenue for the month amounted to $412.2m, according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. This was up from $373.3m in the same month in 2022 but 5.7% behind the $436.9m generated in January of this year.

Physical slot machines remained the core source of revenue in the state, with the $159.3m collected in February being 3.5% ahead of the previous year.

However, land-based table games revenue slipped 4.9% to $55.6m, although this was the only segment to experience a decline.

Spain: Sports betting drives 80% YoY revenue growth

Gross gambling revenue (GGR) in Spain increased by 78.2% year-on-year during the fourth quarter of 2022, driven by growth within the sports betting segment.

For the three-month period, GGR amounted to €313.3m (£274.7m/$334.2m), which was also 27.1% higher than €240.8m in the third quarter of 2022, according to figures published by Spanish regulator Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).

Breaking this down, sports betting GGR amounted to €141.4m, a 223.4% increase on the previous year (52.8% up quarter-on-quarter) and representing 45.1% of all GGR generated during the quarter.

The DGOJ noted a 108.5% quarter-on-quarter jump in pre-match bets and a 13.8% increase in in-play wagers, while other bettings were up 86.8% and horse betting 63.6%.

Turning to casino and GGR was 32.4% higher at €142.3m, up 32.4% year-on-year and 11.1% higher than in Q3. The sector accounted for 45.4% of total GGR in Q4, marginally ahead of sports betting.

Playtech acquires Hard Rock Digital stake in partnership deal

Playtech has purchased a minority equity ownership stake in Hard Rock Digital (HRD), the interactive gaming and sports betting division of Hard Rock International and Seminole Gaming, as part of a wider deal between the two businesses.

Playtech will pay $85.0m (£69.8m/€79.5m) for a low, single-digit percentage stake in HRD, with proceeds from the investment to fund HRD’s global expansion.

Hard Rock’s online and retail sports betting is currently operated in select US states including Arizona, Indiana, Iowa, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. It aims to extend its online sportsbook and igaming offerings to select international markets in the coming years.

Betsson launches Betsafe in Ontario following licence approvals

Betsson has announced the launch of its Betsafe brand in Ontario after it secured approval for operator and supplier licences in the Canadian province.

The B2C Betsafe offering in Ontario will include online casino and sports betting, with the brand to run on the Strive Gaming platform, which is part-owned by Betsson.

Italy’s sports betting revenue dipped in the lead-up to the Fifa World Cup

Italy's igaming revenue in November dipped slightly to €322.5m in the lead-up to the Fifa World Cup, down from October’s revenue of €331.1m.

Since pushing past the €300m barrier in September 2022, Italy’s igaming revenue has remained relatively stable. Although November’s revenue of €322.5m does represent a 2.6% decline month-on-month, this is still a 6.0% increase year-on-year. The decline was mostly consistent across all verticals, although sports betting’s decline of 4.3% was the biggest drop for November, with revenue of €126.3m.

However, online sports betting still fared better than retail sports betting, which suffered a decline of 16.4% month-on-month, which is a decrease in revenue from €88.6m in October to €74.1m in November.

In contrast to the betting figures, casino revenues only dropped by 2.1% from €180.0m to €176.1m.

FSB launches sports betting in Ontario with Fitzdares

B2B sportsbook and igaming service provider FSB has launched in the Canadian province of Ontario in partnership with long-term partner Fitzdares.

Under the arrangement, Fitzdares, which went live in the market earlier this month, is now running a sportsbook powered by FSB’s sports betting technology.

Fitzdares’ igaming offering is also being driven by FSB’s online casino aggregation product, while the bookmaker also has access to the FSB back office platform.
