Genius Sports set to extend Premier League data deal until 2029

Genius Sports has been chosen as the successful bidder to extend its official betting data partnership with Football DataCo, which holds data rights to the English Premier League (EPL).

DataCo also holds rights to data from the English Football League (EFL), containing the Championship, League One and League Two, as well as all leagues overseen by the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), including the Scottish Premiership.

Genius has now entered into an exclusive period of negotiation with DataCo as it seeks to get the extension over the line. The renewed agreement is still subject to contract and the approval of the leagues and their clubs.

Genius has exclusively supplied low latency data to DataCo from the EPL, EFL and SPFL since 2019. The current deal expires at the end of the 2024-25 season, with the new contract set to last until 2029.

The fresh deal will see Genius Sports continue to distribute data from over 4,000 UK football fixtures per season.

Risky business: The perils of setting Premier League odds

Simon Trim, launch consultant to 10star lifts the lid on the headaches facing bookmakers as a new Premier League season starts and what they can do to separate the signals from all the noise.

If, as a famous saying goes, the thoughts of a young man turn to love in springtime, then at this point in the summer – at the start of the football season – it’s all about what bookmakers are going to lay.

For trading teams, there are a multitude of factors to take into account – the significant one being transfers.

New signings can generate a lot of excitement among fans in the same way that losing a key player can be a big blow. Tottenham have drifted by around 7% to finish in the EPL top four next season, largely on the back of Harry Kane heading to Bayern Munich.

While the transfer spending firepower of both the Saudi Arabia and MLS leagues and the subsequent means of offloading expensive unwanted players is good news for some Premier League clubs,..

Not such a special one: The Premier League shirt “ban”

Following news of the Premier League gambling sponsorship ban, Jon Bruford queries whether this is at best belated and at worst ineffective.

In an unsurprising move, the English Premier League has collectively agreed to remove gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ match day shirts.

For those not interested in sports, this is football (soccer) and the Premier League is one of the most watched professional leagues of any sport, anywhere in the world.

This will certainly be met with smiles by most of the industry’s critics but, let’s face it, this is a largely pointless move made by the league so they don’t lose all the revenue from gambling. It’s placatory at best, pointless at worst. Why?

That’s a great question and one I’m glad you asked. But where do we begin?

The gambling industry – and its critics – has recognised that advertising around sport is potentially a problem for quite a while. Even those industry guardians the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) have stood astr..

English FA charges Brentford star Toney over 232 betting breaches

The English Football Association (FA) has charged Ivan Toney, who plays for English Premier League football club Brentford, with misconduct after ruling that he breached its strict betting regulations.

Toney last week admitted he was assisting the FA with an investigation amid newspaper reports he bet on football matches earlier in his career.

The Daily Mail said the FA has been investigating Toney for seven months over allegations he was betting on games during his time playing in the lower leagues. It is not thought Toney ever placed bets on the team he was playing for at the time to lose.

The FA has now confirmed Toney was charged after its investigation uncovered that he had breached betting rules 232 times between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021.

The specific breach was in relation to FA Betting Rule E8, which states any player, match official or coach must not bet, either directly or indirectly, on any matters related to football anywhere in the world.

Though the FA did..

English football must distance itself from the Pogos

iGB op-ed: Zak Thomas-Akoo argues that in the wake of criminal scandals regarding offshore operators based in the Philippines, the continued association by English football clubs with the sector could be a ticking time-bomb for scandal.

Most fans of Premier League clubs probably couldn’t tell you much about the Pogo sector, but it has become deeply embedded in top-flight English football.

A Philippines Offshore Gambling Operation (Pogo) is a Philippines-based gambling site that broadcasts games of chance to other jurisdictions – usually elsewhere in Asia. Almost by definition, this comes without approval by local authorities in the operator’s target markets. While China has been the highest-profile target, a number of Pogos also specialise in the Korean or Vietnamese markets.

The sector is also widely believed to be infiltrated by criminal organisations and has been linked to crimes such as human trafficking, slavery and prostitution, with the situation getting so bad that a senator..

British sporting events suspended following death of Queen Elizabeth II

Football’s English Premier League and a number of other major British sports organisations have announced that events and games will not go ahead this weekend following the death of the queen.

Premier League clubs met this morning to discuss this weekend’s round of matches, with teams agreeing to postpone all matches, including the Monday night match between Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, as a mark of respect.

The queen passed away yesterday (8 September) at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after 70 years on the throne.

“We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to her majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said. “As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her..
